What is vitamin C?
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a vitamin and nutrient your body uses to form cartilage, muscle, blood vessels, and collagen. It also helps with your body's healing process.
Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells against free radicals which are produced by the sun, X-rays, smoke, or as other nutrients are broken down in the body. Free radicals may play a part in causing disease such as cancer and heart disease.
Why do we need vitamin C?
Since your body does not produce vitamin C on its own, it must come from your diet. You can find vitamin C in fruits and vegetables or taken as a supplement. If you smoke, have gastrointestinal conditions, certain types of cancer, or have a limited diet low in fruits and vegetables, your body may be in deficiency. Severe deficiency can cause scurvy, anemia, bruising, anemia, and slow wound recovery.
What foods contain vitamin C?
Vitamin C can be found in many whole foods:
- berries
- citrus fruits
- tomatoes
- potatoes
- broccoli
- spinach
- peppers
- and many more
To ensure you receive proper amounts of vitamin C, supplementation may be the best route for you - especially when on a restrictive diet. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about how much vitamin C you should take each day.
