Hi Tyler!

Yes, Quinoa is a protein rich non-wheat grain, a great healthy alternative to eating rice or wheat. The problem is that the carbohydrate content of quinoa is still high, even in a small amount. By taking in those carbs, your blood sugar will go up, which you are trying to avoid happening in Step 1.

Just to give you a comparison (and for people like me who love numbers!): The glycemic index of a food tells you the effect of that food on a person's blood sugar level. It is a number, usually between 50 and 100 (100 represents pure glucose).

Quinoa - 53
Oats - 55
Table Sugar - 59
White rice - 89
Cornflakes cereal - 93
Fruit Rollups - 99
Baked Russet Potato - 111

Eating quinoa has almost the same effect on your system as table sugar! On Step 1 of the program, remember to follow the materials online and in your dieter folder on what and what NOT to eat. There are a great variety of foods there that will help you stick to Step 1. You can continue to post your questions here or call us here at ITG Diet toll free, 1-866-544-8444.

Once you are into Step 2, you will gradually add food groups back into your diet. In Step 3, you will be able to eat something like quinoa. But for now, don't deviate from the plan and add foods that you are uncertain of. The ITG Diet is about science and how your body processes foods!

Great Question!
